NIRMAN Yuva Center

NIRMAN Yuva Center –  IT School for NT-DNT  youths in Keshawnagar and Mundva communities in Pune city”

NIRMAN a right based organization began as an initiative in 2006 from the group of youths who belong to the Denotified and Nomadic Tribes who studied in the field of social work. Their focus is on emancipation of the most discriminated communities, officially termed as the Nomadic Tribes (henceforth NT) and De-notified Tribes (henceforth DNT). The aim of NIRMAN is to empower NT and DNT and bring about social transformation and participatory democracy through education and democratic mobilization.

Nomadic and Denotified Tribes (NT-DNT) are one of the most marginalized communities in India. In Maharashtra State, there are 14 DNT communities and 28 NT communities reside and migrate all over the State for survival and fulfillment of their basic needs. Lack of constitutional safeguards and stigmatization of criminality attached to their identities make them face violence and vulnerabilities in every walk of life. They face severe issues related to citizenship entitlement, human rights violation and women’s secondary status, lack of livelihood, education, health services and hygienic living conditions. This is the basic situation of Nomadic and Denotified tribes

Historically, these communities are stigmatized as a criminal by birth in 1871. These communities declared as a criminal. They all are kept in settlement. In India there were 52 settlements and within that Mundwa is one of the settlements in Pune. Mundwa is one of the backward areas in the Pune city. In Mundwa, there are different pockets like Keshawnagar, Gairan wasti, Sarode wasti etc. Here majority Nomadic and Denotified communities are living together like Kaikadi, Wadder, Rajput Bhamata,  Takari and Paradhi.

The residential places of these communities have turned into slums over the period of time. A slum, as defined by the United Nations agency UN-HABITAT, is a run-down area of a city characterized by substandard housing and squalor and lacking in tenure security. These communities are living in extremely impecunious conditions. There is no permanent and dignified source of livelihood. Children lack proper education as well as educational environment. Their families are illiterate and unaware about the importance of education. It is the first or second generation, which is going to school.  Due to lack of education and burden of earning daily wages, parents are unable to pay attention towards child education. As their economic condition is very vulnerable, they can’t pay the children’s tuition fees. Girls’ education is very much neglected in the communities. Her status is always secondary.

Also, there are boys and girls above the age of 18 years, who are unable to continue their education after 10th .12th, due to their poor economic background. Since they are less educated, they do not get better job opportunities. Hence there is need to develop and start some short term vocational courses (especially IT Skills and English communication skills, which are in demand) for the youth. It will also open new avenues in the e-world. During the same phase, these students will be imparted soft skills like communication, interview, customer handling skills etc. This project will give them an earning source and increase the quality of living in the families and the communities.  Also, there are youth who are interested to pursue the courses like beautician, nursing, driving etc from standard institutes, but are unable to pay the fees. If such deserving students are identified and are given loans for paying their fees, it will help them still pursue.
